A bust and monument dedicated to José María Teclo Morelos y Pavón, an
early 19th century hero of the Mexican Revolution, was dedicated
Thursday night in a ceremony at downtown's McLeod Lake.

The statue is a gift from the Mexican government to Stockton. Twelve
cities nationwide received one of the bronze busts of Morelos. The
Mexican consul general also was involved in the donation and
dedication.

Morelos was a revolutionary rebel leader who played an important role
in the Mexican War of Independence movement, particularly following
the execution of an earlier leader, Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, in
1811. Both were Roman Catholic priests.

So, what significance does this leader have to the United States?

I have a Russian (legal) immigrant friend who lives in an area of a
couple hundred thousand Russian or former Soviet Bloc (legal) immigrants
in an area of Los Angeles. They don't have a bust or monument to Stalin
in their area of LA.
