And the world’s richest individual is . . . Carlos Slim.

According to Sentidocomun, a respected website that carries economic
and business news from Mexico, the country’s telecommunications
magnate continues to occupy the top slot with a personal net worth of
$59.3bn by the end of the second quarter of this year.

Sentidocomun’s calculation is interesting for several reasons. One is
that the website calculates Mr Slim’s net worth every three months
instead of annually in the case of Forbes.

The book by Naomi Klein, "Shock Doctrine," explains how obscenely
wealthy men like "Mr." Slim are symptoms of the looting of the wealth of
nations like Mexico, Argentina, Greece, and Spain (or the U.S.) and that
the vast majority of Mexicans see their standard of living decline as
the Mr. Slims of the world are celebrated by people like Jose for their
accumulation of billions of dollars. The Mexican cleaning toilets in
Chicago and sending back money to her impoverished family in Mexico is
the flip side of the coin of free trade and globalization. Carlos Slim
would run her down with his limousine if she were to make him late for
an appointment with a high priced hooker.
