Arizona Republic - 11/03/2011
Those marching will include members of Irish and Mexican descent and
those with an affinity for both countries. The men will be dressed as
el charros (Mexican cowboys), wearing traditional Mexican pants and
short jackets, spurs and sombreros. Mariachis will perform, and
Escaramuza Tonali, a women's competitive precision side-saddle team,
also will participate.
Los San Patricios de Arizona was formed in 1997 by O'Brien, 88, an
iconic businessman and former wool merchant who once owned 56 acres on
Camelback Mountain and donated 26 acres of it to Phoenix for a
preserve. O'Brien, a former rancher and rodeo rider, has managed to
round up 700 members for Los San Patricios. There are no dues, fees or
meetings for members, he said, just a sharing of common character.
"The Mexicans love the Irish, and the Irish love the Mexicans," he
said. "Both groups have a love of family and fun and have a strong
work ethic."
