Ehem, due respect for the lady, but the greatest conductor in the
world in my compatriot Gustavo Dudamel. He used to live in the
projects (Urbanizacion Sucre, Barquisimeto, Estado Lara), my nephews
knew him when he was poor and unknown.

Needless to say Latin America needs to export more Gustavos,
Astronauts, etc., and fewer drug dealers. :-(

Really? You think that improves Latin America?

I never said that every quality individual needs to be exported to
leading countries. There are, however, some outstanding persons who
qualify for the Big Leagues (*), and they happen to be in one country
only (my apologies to the Canucks).

Take for instance a Venezuelan doctor friend/acquaintance of mine. He
is the head of the cardiology department at Mass General Hospital.
Another excellent example is Roberto Goizueta, the best CEO Coca-Cola
ever had.

(I doubt that Fidel had much use for him, or Chavez for yours truly,
for that matter!).

Then there is Manuel Blum (relative of a friend), winner of the Turing
Award (equivalent to the Nobel, in Computer Science)

The "secret" of America's success is that she attracts the best and
the brightest, the most ambitious. Sometimes, they happen to be the
best with a scalpel, sometimes the best with a broom.
